Struggles, and a little victory, too.

The weekend was difficult. I had company from out of town visiting to work on a project that has been taking quite a lot out of me over the last six months. Add on top of that some rather complicated emotional history with the people involved, an you have a very tired, cranky me.

I held it together for the most part, I'm happy to say. I stayed raw through the entire working weekend, even though it was a bit of an inconvenience to my guest. Looking back, I wish I'd been less stringent. Some things are more important than being 100% anal. Anyway, I did fine UNTIL, I went to take my 4-year-old to dinner to reconnect with her after my working weekend.

She wanted pizza. I ate it.

I thought of my ten followers, who I don't know, but feel obligated to. I thought about not telling you, but that's just not my way. I caved. I told myself it was for my little girl, but it was really because I was tired and emotionally drained, and I just wanted cheese.

Please, please, please! Anyone have a recipe that REALLY tastes like cheese? Nutritional yeast doesn't do it, really. Cheese and butter are the things I'm longing for. It's the salty, fatty, subtle comfort of those two that I'm after. I'm going to try to make sunflower cheese tomorrow if I have time.

Tonight, I made a gorgeous fruit salad with strawberries, grapes, and squeezed lemon juice over it. I tried adding mint leaves- not so good.

Now, I'm snacking on an Asian salad of purple cabbage, blood orange, bok choy, shredded carrots, and a dressing of white wine vinegar, soy sauce, and oil. Mmmmm....

  1. (To answer your question from the previous post, I've been raw for 2 years).

To me, taste in cheese is a non-issue. We don't crave cheese for the taste. If you think about it, it doesn't really taste like much. And the taste thats there really isn't that special. You never take a bite of cheese (especially from a pizza) and think "wow! this tastes amazing!

Cheese is all about how it makes you feel. Do some research on it, its addictive. Plus it sits in your stomach and gives you that sedated, weird high feeling.

I talk about this in one my my old blog posts, check it out here

  2. Keep on going!
I just wanted to let you know, I'm here, and stalking you...er...reading your blog.
As for cheese and butter...I can't help much. I don't crave cheese. There might be a recipe with tahini somewhere that could resemble the taste of cheese. Coconut oil is awesome and has the melting/hardening properties of butter. Add a little salt and it's so much like butter.
Again, keep on keepin' on! And don't kill yourself over a piece of pizza, you aren't supposed to be "on a diet" or restricting yourself. It's supposed to be inclusive and fun and an adventure!

  3. Jon: I think you're right on about the emotional connection with cheese and butter. I also have it with candy. Those are my "F* it all, I'm tired/sad/angry foods." Comfort foods, in other words. The reason I've been so excited about cacao in place of coffee is that it replaces the warm, earthy richness as well as the caffeine. My emotional need is met, so I've had no trouble wanting coffee. Thanks for the blog link!

Schrip: I'm going to try the salt in coconut butter think. That has real potential. Thanks!

  4. Oh, and Schrip, you're right about it not being a 'diet' and all. I keep telling myself, "It's not a religion. It's about feeling strong and good."

  5. When I want Pizza here is where I go~
Macho Nacho Sauce from "How We All Went RAW" by Chas. Nungesser and Stephen Malachi

    In Blender add:
    1/2c. distilled water
1 red bell pepper washed and seeded
1/2 c. pine nuts (I use macadamia nuts)
    1/2 c. sunflower seeds
1 T. miso( opt. if used omit sea salt)
    1 clove garlic
    1 Fresno pepper (red Jalapeno)
    1 1/2 T. sea salt

Blend on high until creamy. Serve on top of tacos or as a dip for "chips"

I use mine as a spread on raw crackers or make a raw pizza by adding portabella mushrooms, thinly sliced tomatoes marinated in Braggs liquid aminos and olive oil. Yummy!
